I asked a longtime patient what her therapist was working on.

“Working on? Well, she listens to me every week and I feel better afterward. I can tell her anything, and I really have nobody else to talk to …”

Another therapist who gets by with an easy hour. That is, of course, not therapy. Read more on What Is Your Therapist Working On?…

I am sometimes amazed at my patients. They amaze me when I ask about their therapists. I ask about what their therapists are doing for them. Very surprised, they often tell me things like “I’ve been seeing my therapist for years,” and “She is kind of like a friend I talk to every week.”

If you are a “therapy patient,” you (or your insurance) is paying an alleged therapist to make you better. Well, often patients tell me they are doing or have been doing “nothing, really” and this I believe. Read more on How To Tell If Your Therapist Knows What They Are Doing…

Sexual harassment has been making the news lately.  Dozens of powerful men in Hollywood (especially) and business and government are being accused of misconduct by vulnerable young women (and men in some cases).

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can result from any trauma. Car accidents, animal attacks, a bad fall — not just sexual assault or war.

A high-school student doing a report for school recently wrote to me asking about PTSD.  I thought my answers might be of interest to others, so I’m sharing them with you. Read more on Student Questions About PTSD…

Back in the days before Noah’s flood, a psychiatrist would take care of both the medical and the psychotherapeutic needs of a patient. Of course, we all knew that it took “a different kind of doctor.”  In the old days they said it had to be a Jewish doctor who was afraid of the sight of blood. Of which I am not — I mean, I used to be a surgeon so I put that one to sleep.

Why people can’t accept let alone search for the truth, even if it would save their lives.
You Can't Handle Truth
If this is not the most famous movie quote of all time, it is darn close.

כג  אֱמֶת קְנֵה, וְאַל-תִּמְכֹּר;    חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר וּבִינָה. 23  “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.” Proverbs 23 is a quote I’ve been hanging around with for a really long time.  It even somehow showed up in my high school yearbook, I said it so much.
Believe me, this has a lot to do with why Jack Nicholson is who he is, and why I am the Renegade Doctor.  That is why I can do a course adjustment and know that I have learned that an enormous amount of what I have learned in my medical education is just plain not so.
How does a bad politician differ from a good scientist? When politicians change their course, they Flip-Flop. When scientists change their course, it means they have new data.
People just don’t act as if they are looking for the truth.  The first thing I learned in high school debating seemed paradoxical and weird” at first, but now I know it is totally spot on. I was told I could never debate an assertion rationally if I could not admit the assertion could be wrong. Amazing how high school stays with you for life.

I enjoy having friends, like just about everyone does. But that’s not why I’m in this business. When a patient needs help, I will do my best for them every single time.  And if a few colleagues get bruised egos along the way, so be it.

She was a 53-year-old woman, but I don’t think she even would have liked to hear me to refer to her as a woman.  We’re talking about someone who was short and stout and wore the kind of cap one would expect to see on a newsboy during World War I.  She wore a very male looking zipper jacket, and told me she had the name of the other woman to whom she had dedicated her life tattooed on the back of her neck.

Regardless of all this, her face was red and she was crying. She told me she was chronically suicidal and never thought about anything else.  Despite being medicated, her depression seemed to have gotten worse. Read more on What is there to Treat?…
