I operate on the basis of individual evaluation and don't have a blanket answer on what natural product to use for depression. As a doctor, I look at the whole person -- biological, psychological and social -- and make an accurate diagnosis before deciding on treatment. Is the depression an adjustment disorder (fired from a job, relationship breakup, loss of a loved one)? Or is it due to an illness (undiagnosed diabetes, thyroid problems, hormonal problems)? Or is it only half of an undiagnosed psychiatric condition like bipolar illness? I really avoid answering with a simple product recommendation, since once size does NOT fit all, and your health is a fragile and precious thing that needs personal attention. I wish you well on finding a health professional that can give you the answer that is right for you.

Great Post. I'm very interested in natural alternatives to SSRI type drugs like Prozac and Paxil. They actually increase the risk of suicide, which is the thing people taking them are trying to prevent. I'm looking all over for alternatives. From TrueHope to counseling and theories of depression. What's your answer?

Dr. Goldstein, thank you so much for sharing your patient story. I know there are so many dads out there, experiencing postpartum depression, which normally goes un-diagnosed for years, if not forever. The fact that this guy came to you, admitting his illness, is remarkable! It is so important to reach out, and tell young men, that there are people out there who can help them, when they feel lonely, sad, or angry, impatient, can't concentrate, or irritable.
