sex

I will never forget the sad and jowly face of the obese young mother in her thirties who told me, “maybe if I had more sex with my husband, I would be thinner.  Sex is supposed to burn lots of calories, right?”

A couple of hundred calories (200 to 300) at best, I remembered having read.  I changed the subject, even though everyone knows psychiatrists are supposed to love to talk about sex. If someone is seeking sex to burn calories, it doesn’t sound as if they are having enough fun.  I mean, was she even doing it “right?”

Okay, so you don’t care.  You tell me you don’t have sex too much and that is kind of like birth control. It isn’t.  It might be if it took having sex five times to have a kid, but it only takes one, so you are very likely to get pregnant. Once you get pregnant, the child is your responsibility for life. This should be taken seriously — it isn’t always a bundle of joy and not all “moms” are equipped to handle the stress. If you try to murder the kid you are in worse trouble — yes I have seen girls who have tried that one. Sometimes the baby-daddy will marry you.  This does not necessarily mean happiness — you probably never were thinking of him as a baby-daddy anyway, just a guy who wanted sex and you didn’t feel like fighting with him. Maybe it felt good at the time, but that was then and this is now. If you decide to bring up the child on your own, this single-mother bit is no picnic.  Sure, you got a cute little baby who loves your breast or bottle or whatever. You might not want to think about it now, but in fifteen years or so, you are at high risk to end up with a juvenile delinquent who puts bricks through windows(or worse) and you are responsible. It’s really a cliché’ and may have some basis in reality:

A psychiatrist (Male, of course) has his patient (female, of course) lying on the couch and telling about her dreams or playing “word association” or whatever psychiatrists do – and then they have sex.

But, fellows – if you really want to score with the babes, this is not the way to do it.  Medical school and post-grad studies are darned expensive and take years.  “Ladies Night” at the bowling alley will probably get you into the sack a lot sooner. Read more on Psychiatrists Behaving Badly…

He was in his fifties and he wanted the same medications he had, except for one thing. He just could not manage to have sex with his live-in girlfriend.  He never had.  I was filling in at a clinic where I knew this was the only time I would see him.

There are a couple of strategies with prescription medications that sometimes work.  A partial agonish to reverse a receptor; adding another antidepressant.  I reluctantly told him about them, since a complex mental illness was being otherwise quite well managed. I mean, this man’s diagnosis was “schizo- affective disorder.”  He had been really psychotic, hearing bad things and thinking they were real and running naked in the streets.  As much as I think an interest in sex is healthy and part of normal living, I certainly did not want to risk having all of these horrible things happen to him again. Luckily, he told me the last thing in the world he wanted to think about was another drug.  Even a little bit of another drug.

There are herbal solutions that actually work.  I was thinking about some oriental herbs, which I certainly did not think were that expensive.  But he assured me he had no disposable income at all. Maybe true, maybe not, but I always wonder at least a little bit when people tell me that they want something very badly, but then do not seem to find any money for it.  I mean, he was a heavy smoker (over a pack a day) and I was certain insurance did not pay for that.  I tried to approach this subject, and he became so angry at me I would have dived under the desk for protection if it had been physically possible.
