A College Degree Based On Your Figure
Body mass index cutoff for college graduation? Give me a break.
It is idiotic to foster prejudice against the obese at an institution of higher learning when we know that people are discriminated against for jobs by their weight. To offer courses and help is good. To confound intellectual output with girth is just plain stupid.
Has anyone ever been refused a university degree because they failed to quit smoking? Has anyone ever been refused a degree for non-compliance with any kind of medical treatment? Obese people do not get the same quality of medical care as non-obese people. Yes, there are lifestyle changes that seem to be able to help. But there are also a large variety of putative interventions that may help, or theories. Obese people do not even get the right size of chairs or gowns when they get into a doctor’s office.
I have no reason to believe, based on what my patients tell me, that doctors ever tell them anything useful that may improve their condition. If the interventions or a single “course” offered in a University do not help the problem, just show me the Academics responsible for this decision. I’ll bet they are really skinny and so I could whup their a$$.
I am actually embarrassed that I ended up quoting Kaiser Permanente on this one, but they happen to be right. It is easier to blame, to discipline, to regulate, than it is to find a cause and help. I would like to see people try to do something that might work. Me, I think that up-regulating the metabolism is the answer. I recommend a machine that works that way for a lot of folks, and it gives them a terrific night’s sleep without drugs as a bonus. If that alone is not the answer, it is not pharmacology.
I have been telling people for years that if there was something that did not have a rebound and actually worked, this woman would not be a fat psychopharmacologist. It is not pharmacology.
There are programs and strategies. If they are punitive, they are not to be trusted. Everything I have ever seen that works starts with self-love and self-acceptance.
These people have distorted higher education. We should devalue their diplomas and start building them a bad reputation. They just don’t get it.
